Postpartum Fertility

Understanding your postpartum fertility

One of the funniest questions a new mother gets asked by friends and family after delivery is, “When will you have the next one?” Who knows why that’s the question, when you’re still in a haze from delivery hours, days, or weeks before, but it’s surprisingly common! It does bring to mind an important reminder, though: your fertility will return, sometimes sooner than later.

At your 6 week postpartum check up, your OBGYN will ask you how you’d like to address this returning fertility. He/she may talk with you about common options like hormonal contraception (birth control pill) or an IUD (hormonal or copper), and you may feel comfortable with these options. You may have used them before pregnancy.

But if you’re interested in learning about a more natural approach to managing your fertility, we’d like to offer our postpartum fertility services. Utilizing the Creighton model system, we teach couples how to understand their current fertility and make informed decisions about how to use the system to avoid or achieve a pregnancy without the use of hormones, devices, or chemicals. Like birthing naturally, there are many benefits to using the Creighton system to understand and utilize your fertility.

  • You learn to be in tune with your body’s signals of fertility and infertility

  • There are no negative health side effects (short or long term)

  • It increases intimacy and bonding between spouses, as you understand your joint fertility together

  • This system allows you to be an active participant in your own gynecological health, regardless of pregnancy intention

  • You have total flexibility each cycle to respond to the Lord’s guidance on your family size, whether that’s through trying to achieve a pregnancy or avoiding pregnancy

You may be wondering if this system can be used effectively while postpartum or breastfeeding, and the answer is yes! This system is 99.5% effective at avoiding pregnancy (same as birth control and IUDs!).

At least 35% of women will ovulate before their first period postpartum. Charting through our services allows you to see that return to fertility approaching and make informed decisions about how to use that time. You don’t have to be surprised by your first period!

We have a lot of experience in postpartum charting and know all the options for what your body may show, including how long it takes to return to cycling and how breastfeeding or bottle-feeding may affect that timeline. When it comes to postpartum fertility, you don’t want to leave it up to chance or averages.

We want to provide you with thorough, research-based, natural support, even after your delivery!
